When it's most crowded

Ganeshotsav

The Ganesh festival in August or September brings the biggest crowds of the year.

Maghi Ganesh Jayanti

January or February, another major festival day.

Angarki Chaturthi

Sankashti falling on a Tuesday; long queues through the day.

Long weekends

Diwali, Christmas–New Year and summer holidays fill hotels early.

Best time of day

Reach before 9 am for a calm darshan and a cooler beach. The temple's aarti times are about 5:00 am, 12:00 noon, 7:00 pm and 8:40 pm; check locally on festival days, when timings can change.

From Ratnagiri city the drive is about 1 hour, so a 7 am start works well. See the Ratnagiri to Ganpatipule taxi page for the route.

How many days, and a 2-day plan

One day is enough for darshan and the beach. Two days lets you see the coast around it without rushing.

1

Day 1, afternoon

Arrive, check in, evening darshan and the 7 pm aarti, then sunset on the beach.

2

Day 2, early morning

A calm darshan before 9 am, then Malgund and the Jai Vinayak temple.

3

Day 2, late morning

Jaigad fort and lighthouse, about 19 km north. Or go south to the Aare-Ware viewpoint and Ratnagiri city.

Which beach is best?

None of these is a swimming beach in the monsoon.

Ganpatipule

The temple beach, and the busiest. Paddle at most; don't swim.

Malgund

About 1 km north and quieter, for an easy walk.

Aare-Ware

The best view: a roadside viewpoint above two beaches, on the way to Ratnagiri.

Why Ganpatipule beach is dangerous

The beach shelves steeply, so the water gets deep within a few steps, and the currents can be strong, especially from June to September. In June 2026, five tourists from a group of 19 drowned after going into the sea here.

Stay out of the water in the monsoon, follow the lifeguards' flags, keep children close, and don't go in after dark.
